Word came out yesterday that this year's 4th of July Fireworks celebration in the town of Barnstable will not happen this year...and you can blame it all on the piping plovers!
The Mass Wildlife's Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program informed the town that the place in Lewis Bay where the barge sits when setting off the fireworks is too close to Smith Point off Great Island, which has a protected area for nesting piping plovers and least terns.
In fact, they tried to stop last year's display...but by the time they made the request, it was too close to show time, so the fireworks went off as planned.
This year, the mandate will be enforced, so the town will have to move the fireworks celebration to the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend.
