Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the fifth of nine children born to Joseph & Rose Kennedy.
Affected by the injustice she witnessed against people with intellectual disabilities, like her sister, Rosemary, she started a summer day camp at her home to help people like Rosemary explore their potential at sports and physical activities.
That camp led to her creation of the Special Olympics in 1968.
Currently, there are 5.5 million athletes involved in Special Olympics...in 193 countries around the world!
