MEET CHLOE!
Chloe is a 3-year-old spayed female ragdoll who was surrendered to us because she was urinating outside of her litterbox around the home. Ragdolls are known for being very needy and affectionate.
We cannot pin point exactly what was causing her to do this, but inappropriate elimination is often fueled by anxiety and stress. We were able to identify some of the possible triggers that existed in her original home that will need to be avoided in her new home.
Chloe's home should ideally should be:
- A home with no other animals (cats + dogs)
- A home with someone home a lot
- An owner open to behavioral medication such as Prozac (if problem persists in the future)
- An owner aware that house soiling can be a "trial-by-error" issue and may not resolve with one change
- Two (2) large, uncovered litter boxes, cleaned daily with non-clumping litter to start
When cats are stressed and unhappy, this comes out in different behavioral forms such as house soiling, aggression or lack of appetite. Keeping her new home as predictable as possible will benefit Chloe, and if a move is in the future, starting to prepare her as early as possible will yield the best results. Chloe would be best off in a quiet, stable household who will be able to monitor this patient's demeanor and litterbox habits closely. Confinement to a small room for the introductory period will be essential to making Chloe feel safe in her new home. Most cats instinctively use a litter box, but in some cases they have had something happen that caused them to use other places to eliminate. Thankfully, there are many positive and proactive things you can do to encourage reliable use of the litter box in your home. By confining Chloe for the first couple of weeks in the new home, you should see higher rate of success in consistent litter box use.
