Kevin's "Oscarpalooza" has begun!

So, as you may know, I'm not a big "movie person"!

But every year when the Oscar nominations come out...I gear up for Kevin's "Oscarpalooza"! That's a fancy name for...try and see all of the best picture nominees before the awards are given out LOL!

There are 8 nominated films this year. I use the word "film" so I sound like a real, true movie critic...which of course, I ain't LOL!

Anyway, I saw 4 of the movies this past holiday weekend...and I thought I'd give you my take on them:

  • "Black Panther"...I have never been a comic book fan, so I cringed when this movie (ahem...film) was nominated. So I went into it with a bad taste in my mouth. But, much to my surprise, it was pretty good! Even though comic book series are not my cup of tea, I actually thought the story line was really entertaining! The classic "good guys wins, good guy loses to bad guy, good guy comes back to beat bad guy and win in the end" format was predictable...but it was done well. 6 out of 10 stars for me on this one!
  • "The Favourite"...I actually like period films and I love history, so I went into this one looking forward to it! Oops! It was one of the strangest movies I have ever seen! I guess there may have been a plot in there somewhere...but I couldn't really find it! Maybe it was a look at "life at court" in medieval times?! The backstabbing...the wicked & crude behavior between those fighting for favor with the reigning monarch?! Okay, I guess. It just didn't work for me. 4 out of 10 stars.
  • "Green Book"...I liked this movie because it was a true story with a great lesson about knocking down the walls of prejudice by taking time to walk a mile in someone else's shoes! We all have grown up in different situations with its own peculiar customs and traditions...and unfortunately, in some cases, prejudices! This is a great movie because it shows that we can overcome those by just talking honestly to each other and learning from each other. My favorite line comes during an argument between Dr. Shirley, who is the African American pianist and his white, Italian driver, Tony Lip. Dr. Shirley says something to the effect of, "So if I'm not white enough, and I'm not black enough and I'm not man enough...what am I?!" The kind of movie that entertains and tries to teach a lesson...I like those! 7 out of 10 stars
  • "A Star Is Born"...I did NOT want to like this movie! I don't know why! Maybe because I thought it was going to be a chick flick! But let me tell you...this was no chick flick! First of all,,,Lady Gaga is BRILLIANT! That didn't feel like I was watching an actress play a role...she WAS the role! And Bradley Cooper...wow! He probably won't win best actor...but man, he should! A true story about what it takes to be in the music business! Well, maybe except for the "Pretty Woman" fantasy start to it! The toll addiction can take one you...the pressure the business puts on you...it was GREAT! And I didn't see the ending coming either! Best movie I've seen yet out of the nominees...8 out of 10 stars for me!

Alright...I have 4 movies left and 5 days to go...let's see if I can finish!
