New Federal Vessel Rules Could Cost Nantucket $300M

New federal vessel speed restrictions could be costly if they are expanded into Nantucket Sound.

The restrictions seeking to protect endangered North Atlantic right whales would have an impact on Nantucket ferry service if expanded to the sound.

It would force a reduction of the number of ferries and their speed between November first and May 30th each year.

A study by the UMass Donahue Institute indicates that the speed restrictions would have a negative impact of 300-million-dollars a year on Nantucket's economy.
