Selena Gomez-Produced Film To Make Theatrical Debut In July

Summer 2020 will see theaters reopen and a Selena Gomez production will become the first wide major studio release of the year.

Produced by the pop titan, The Broken Hearts Gallery is a romantic-comedy that marks the directorial debut of Natalie Krinsky, and stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Dacre Montgomery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Molly Gordon and more. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions' Stage 6 Films acquired the worldwide rights to the film from producer and financier No Trace Camping. The movie follows a twenty-something art gallery assistant named Lucy, who lives in New York City and gets dumped by her boyfriend. As an emotional hoarder, she's always been one to keep a souvenir from her past relationships, so her latest romantic fail inspires her to create a pop-up installation with items that she's held onto all these years.

In a statement for the film, Gomez said that she was happy to be part of a project that was driven by a female collaborator. "Hearing from more female writers and directors is very much needed. Natalie is a wonderful talent and I am happy to be a part of her debut film," she said. "I understand people’s concerns regarding returning to activities we all loved prior to COVID-19. I hope everyone will listen to scientists’ recommendations and consider others’ health and safety while enjoying the movie theater experience."

Meanwhile, Krinsky, who serves as a writer and director for the film, couldn't be more elated to have her project in theaters nationwide. "I am beyond thrilled Sony has defined our relationship by bringing The Broken Hearts Gallery into the world," she explained in a statement. "Getting a film made — especially your first — is like finding a soulmate: years of heartbreak and (maybe) ultimate triumph. In this moment of distance it feels good to fall in love. I can’t wait for audiences to (safely) see it in theaters."

The Broken Hearts Gallery hits theaters on July 10.
